Have a Go – Catch & Throw Clinic

Last Saturday morning Malvern Lacrosse Club hosted “Have A Go – Catch & Throw “ Lacrosse clinic. This clinic was organised & managed by  Lacrosse Services.

The clinic was designed for our younger Junior players and new to Lacrosse children. The event was advertised to many schools in the Malvern areas and also promoted heavily at Christchurch Primary School where Dave & Colin are running weekly Lacrosse sessions.

Approximately 35 kids  attended the clinic with 10 new to lacrosse kids also. There were 4 events on the day culminating in a Fastest Shot competition where 1st prize for each group was a new Lacrosse Stick.

The winners were

12 & under – Lachlan Bown with a shot speed of 88

Over 12 – Nick Chapman with a shot speed of 113  –   A special mention to Nick who donated his prize to his mate that does not have a Lacrosse Stick

It was great to see so many people there on the day helping out and generally supporting the event.

Many of the parents of the “new to Lacrosse” group commented on what fun their kids had and how they enjoyed the clinic. I have emailed all of these new children/ Parents about our future clinics in October & November and will also link them to the Malvern Newsletter.

Thank you to all the people that helped out on the day and a special mention to Dave Gal for his work in the lead up.

Game Day Reports

State League

Malvern vs Camberwell.

Result – Won 13-7

We are now half way to our goal of 8 wins straight with 4 wins on the trot and even though we won a tiny bit ugly against Camberwell on Saturday, including not scoring in the last quarter, that was a little to be expected after the Eltham win the week before.

The expectation this week is to be back to our best down at Williamstown and cement our deserved place in the playoffs.

Sport gives people the opportunity to remember big games and big results and this week is one for a Malvern lifetime.

We haven’t beaten Williamstown at Williamstown since 1999, but we also haven’t had such a talented focused group since then as well and if we bring “our best” we will win……… period.

It started already last Sunday morning with a great session on the track and Tuesday and Thursday need to be focused, intense, skilled and passionate, if they are, we will go to Williamstown and set the record straight and the cards will fall where they will after that………………….

Murray and I have loved coaching the team in 2011 and can’t wait for Saturday, we are ready.

Bring it on !!!!!!

Division 2

Malvern vs Chadstone.

Result – Won 9-8

Under 16’s

Malvern vs Williamstown Fearon.

Result – Loss 13-14

Malvern 16’s lose in a thriller!

Our final home and away game was against the unbeaten Willy in very sunny conditions.

Willy only had 10 players which included a fill in goalie, but that did not matter too much as Willy controlled the face offs gaining 1st use of the ball.

Our defence was again under constant pressure and poor clearing did not help our cause.

By half time we were trailing 11 to 5.

The 3rd quarter had us putting in a more competitive effort, still missing Dylan and Timmy the team could see that Willy were running out of steam.

We broke even in this ¼, both teams scoring 3.

Being 6 goals down at the start of the last 1/4 brought out a super effort by Corey in the face offs. Corey won all of the face offs for the 1/4 and our forward unit played the best attack for the year.

Corey continued to win the ball and each time we scored. We managed 5 goals and kept Willy scoreless.

Darcy was very productive and finished with 4 goals and 1 assist,  Joey kept running the midfield and scored 3 goals.

Nick doing the feeding was brilliant again he scored 2 goals with excellent backing up and good decision making.

Sammy, Jordy, Michael and Gary all worked well in the midfield to finish with 1 goal each.

Corey our final 1/4 hero had 1 assist but his effort was just outstanding and team lifting.

This weeks game 1st semi final against Eltham-Surrey.

Under 14’s

BYE

No games this weekend, the team finished on top of the ladder and head into the 2nd Semi final

Under 12 Red’s

Malvern Red vs Camberwell Buzz.

Result – Loss 1-13

The Reds played in picture perfect conditions on the weekend.

Unlike last week, all the players were great and listened to the coaches at all times.

It was great to see that all the kids have been absorbing the information the coaches have been telling them all year and everyone was running in both directions – mainly running hard into defence as soon as the opposition got the ball.

The defence was top notch with everyone manning up on a player and then when shots were on everyone got in front of the player shooting making it very difficult for the Camberwell players to get the shot off.

Our goal came from Jenna with an assist from Abhi.

Once again the goalies have to be congratulated for another great performance.

We will see everyone this weekend for the round robin tournament at Camberwell.

Under 12 Black’s

Malvern Black vs Chadstone Red.

Result – Won 14-6

The last game of the regular season.   It has been exciting all season and this game was a lot of fun.

After losing to Chadstone in controversial circumstances earlier in the season, we were pumped to get a chance to even the result up.

With a full line up and all players ready to play trying to manage the bench was going to be difficult. We got off to a flyer in the first quarter with great teamwork and excellent passing.

Byron had a shut out in goals, George and Tom B scored 2 and Louis chipped in with a classy goal.

It was a hard slog after quarter time with a very determined Chadstone putting up a great contest. Nathan scored our only second quarter goal.

During the half time break we spoke about the importance of good passing and teamwork.  Aaron was on the end of 3 third quarter goals with Ben sticking a very nice Goal.

The last quarter goals were spread around with Tom B, Loc, Ally and Sam all scoring.   It is great to see the mix of experienced and new players working together and having fun.  Our goal is for everyone to have fun and enjoy playing lacrosse.  We rotate players into all positions through out the game so everyone can experience the game.

Lacrosse can take a person all the way around the world as our new American friends have found out and all our young players will have the same opportunity.  It has been great fun coaching this group.  I have coached many of them for a number of seasons and it is great to see how they have developed.

Goal scorers Tom B 3-3, Aaron 3-1, Ben 1-3, George 2-1, Loc 1-2, Ally 1-1, Nathan 1, Sam 1-1, Louis 1 and Tom M 1 assist.

Good luck to all the players going to U14 next season.
