Grand Final day at Malvern!

When?  Saturday 5th September
Where? Malvern Lacrosse Club
RSVP committee@malvernlacrosse.com or call one of the committee members from the website with your availability.    Friday 4th is “setting up” day

GRAND FINAL 2015

As above, we are holding this years Grand Final of U17 Girls & Boys and the Senior Women & Men.

To do this we need a lot of people to help out in many areas.

Serving, Marshalling, Set ups etc just to name a few.

The beauty is you don’t have to work ALL DAY!

If you can offer at least 1-2hrs of your time in helping in some shape or form, the club would be greatly in your debt!

You could do an hour on the canteen and then later in the day maybe an hour on serving at the bar? Too easy.

We are preparing to set up for the event on Friday 4th so if you are available to help on that day, that would be much appreciated too.

There is a roster at the clubrooms for you to put your name against for 1 or 2 jobs.

Thanks in advance.

Game Day Reports!

State League

Semi Final..Surrey Park Win 7 to 6

Firstly, my congratulations to Nick Speak and the Surrey Park team for a tough hard no quarter asked or given Semi final and that is simply how the game should be played and l congratulate them on a terrific season.

A score of 7 to 6 doesn’t sound like much of a game and a couple of people suggested it wasn’t a good match to watch but I couldn’t disagree more, from a players and coaches point of view it was a terrific game to coach and be part of as both sides probed hard for a way through tough defences and what was simply one of the great games l have seen 2 goalkeepers play. Chris Tillotson and David Gal were outstanding and both had a massive impact on the 7 to 6 score line and game as a result.

Our defence with Stephen Fisher, Craig Brown, Lance Coleman was terrific and Cam Shepherd was back to his usual self and to hold Hopper to a clean sheet was outstanding, 18 year old Darcy Campbell also showed he is growing into a tremendous LSM player that belongs at this level now with several tough contests and terrific hard running to join Toby Exton as our contested ground ball jets. Billy Exton was great with his 2 and 1 from X and good to see some rewards for him doing the right things from behind the gage.

It would be remiss of me not mention the ageless Travis Croll who not only threw a couple of beauties from the crease in a tight game but also ran down the Surrey keeper in a great ride to cause a turnover that lifted the whole side in the 3rd quarter.

The only real negative was to do with our decision making in attack especially in the last 5 minutes of the game when we took some very poor options and this will be addressed this week.

We have now earned the right to a preliminary final against Footscray next week and they will require a different game plan and is another big test for us as a group, but l do believe if we get our match ups right and play with the same aggression, passion and determination we will again put ourselves in contention.

Malvern 10 Williamstown 19

Malvern went into the game full of confidence after last weeks win over Caulfield.

The first quarter was a tight struggle with Williamstown outscoring us by 1 to lead by 1 at the first break, Aaron Currie and Tom Bown worked hard to keep us in touch. The second quarter was even tighter with both teams scoring 4 goals for us to be only 1 goal down at the halftime break. In the 3rd quarter we kept with them for a little while before Williamstown put the foot down to outscore us 6 goals to 3. In the last Malvern had no answer to Williamstown who outscored us 6 goals to 1 to win by 9 goals. We gave it our best shot but in the end we ran out of players and legs.

Goals and Assists: Aaron Currie 5 and 1, Anthony Bosisto 1 and 1, Tom Bown 1 and 0, Rob Lowe 1 and 0, Tim Laidlaw 1 and 0, Rod Finnigan 1 and 0, Paul Keisler 0 and 1.

Best: Aaron Currie, Tom Bown, Anthony Bosisto, Brendan Farrell.

Women’s B Grade

B grade had a massive game this week in a preliminary final against Eltham. It was a hard fought game as the Eltham girls were very quick and aggressive. Eltham came out of the starting gates firing, scoring the first goal, not long after that the girls found themselves 3-1 down, but after some amazing turn overs and defence along with a quick goal just before the bell they went into the second half only down by 2 with a score of 7-5. The second half the team came out with determination and fight. The malvern girls fought through some tight defence to end the game tied at 10. During the overtime period Malvern dominated scoring 3 goals to Elthams 0. The Girls couldn’t have won without Claire’s awesome up close and personal defence, Leanne amazing performance in goals making some costly saves and clears during the entire game and Romy’s powerful attacking on the cage. The Girls had great attack from players such as Nina, Eleanor, Tara and Sarah D. Even though there was only 3 goal scorers for the day (Romy-7, Tara-5 and Kate-1) all the girls fought hard for every goal. Everyone played as a team and supported each other very well and couldn’t have had such a successful win without our amazing supporters.

Under 17’s

Finally the game we had been waiting for.

Testing ourselves against Footscray who we’ve only met in R1.

Enthusiasm was up and the spectators from both sides were in for a great game between these two teams.

Centre face offs weren’t as clean cut as per usual but that made the game interesting..ground balls would be key.

As the game played out, it was fairly even as both teams scored to answer the other. The guys endeavoured to execute plays but simple mistakes cost turn overs and the ball went Footscray’s way.

Right up until the final 1/4 we were still in the hunt but unfortunately we went down by 1 goal. This means we meet up with Williamstown on Saturday.

Another bite of the cherry and another game to get to the Grand Final.

The players all agreed that they didn’t play well and have made the statement to themselves to rectify their errors and get back on track.

Their “self evaluation” was pleasing to see and I believe they will bounce back to their potential.
