Club News

So with only SL and B grade women playing on the weekend it was a time for people to either come and spectate, or mow the lawn.
Thanks to all those people who came out to cheer on the SL team on Saturday and the Women on Sunday. (out at Altona)
Good news is that if you were thinking about watching a Womens game, this week they are at the Town Hall against some tough opposition. They’d love to have some vocal supporters on the sideline, so make sure you get around them to encourage them.
It’s suppose to be 21*C so why not!

RSA

So we have a number of members who have completed their RSA courses
which entitles them to ‘serve’ behind the bar in accordance with state law.
Stonnington have told us that if more members would like to get their permit we will need a minimum of 8 people to hold a free course at our earliest convenience. (venue to be confirmed)
If you’re interested in participating and sharing the load, please contact Adam Barnes who will take your details down and inform you when this will take place.

Umpire Accreditation

Online Accreditation – Referees and Umpires
Officiating is a fun and exciting way to become involved with lacrosse.  It’s a great way to keep fit, and you will have the best view of the action!
Online testing is now available via the Australian Lacrosse Association for both referees and umpires.
The testing can be accessed here.  The ALA has also released this document to assist people when navigating the site.

Rulebooks for Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse can be found here.

Match Reports

State League

State League took on Footscray this week with a full side of 16 players. Starting off well we took an early lead in the game 6-1.
The possibility of extending this lead to about 9-1 was there but some poor shooting in bread and butter positions around the crease did not eventuate and the opposition gained some momentum.
We held a 2 goal lead at half time and our groundball gets and overall desire to win the game had been right on target up until the main break.

We came out in a different world after half time and gave up a 7 goal quarter to put us behind the 8 ball at ¾ time. In the last we started to get some momentum back but once again we failed to nail the easy shots. We had our chances to get the game back in the last but at the end of the day basic skill errors and unforced turnovers were to be our downfall.

It was a disappointing loss 13-10 however a very positive game for our team with the younger ones really starting to find their feet in open age competition and showing signs of confidence and ownership.
What we showed is that we DO have the talent to go all of the way if we can concentrate for 4 quarters.
As we move ahead we play Moreland this week at the Town Hall and 4 point is the prize we chase.

Our supporter group have been fantastic so far and I understand they may be a little disappointed with our last 2 games but for the positivity they have shown I am very grateful. Let’s all get up there again this weekend and cheer the boys on.
As a club overall we are fielding 3 senior men’s teams of 16 players in each and that in itself is very positive.
Gus.

Under 17’s

We played 2nd place team Williamstown.
Tim Graham dominated all face offs Ben Chapman played solidly in goals under a lot of pressure.
It was 3 all at half time we threw 6 to nil in the third and finished up with end score of 11 to 4
We meet them again in a few weeks and there is still a lot to be learnt.

Under 11’s

A game out at sunny Altona greeted U11’s.
With a full bench, and some really accomplished players, the opportunity was there to develop some of our less experienced kids and improve their skills and game awareness.
From the outset we had control of the game, and saw an even contribution from everyone.
The third quarter was messy, and a learning opportunity to keep the ball moving when on the ground and pick up the ground ball.
“RILEY” continues to be the assist King and takes his yearly tally to 24.
Next week Camberwell at home.

With thanks
Adam

Club Stuff

Social events are a necessary part of any club and a way to try and generate some sort of cash flow “apart” from the regulars spending week to week.
With these events we’d love for you to “spread the word” to non lacrosse people.
If each person can bring one or more friends, this would help hugely with the costs of running a club.
Not just that but they will have a great time and who knows..might be interested in having a go!

Thursday Night Dinners

Have been going CRAZY!
Running low on most nights due to the huge amount of families dining at “Club Malvern”
We are still looking for people to fill the Thursday night dinner schedule up and there is a roster behind the bar (Not on Nina’s bench ; )….) that has dates available.
Also, we need some helpers to cook dim sims, chips etc on Sat afternoons
so they are ready after games when people are most likely to buy them.
If you are free to cook at just one game, that would be a relief for the regulars who get stuck there week in week out

Aust U19 Boys

As you will know, our 3 boys selected for the team have been working hard on and off the track.
The cost for them to compete overseas is in the ball park of $12k each!!
If any member is in the situation where they could donate a couple of dollars to the boys, I’m sure they would be extremely grateful!
If your able to help out with a donation, you can place it directly into the MLC account and it will be passed onto the lads.

The “Planned Events” for this year are…
Saturday 04 June – Karaoke night
Saturday 18 June – Past players day

Daryl is the grandson of Robert (Bob) Coldstream who is one of our most revered members and is in many of the photos on the wall dating way back.)

Saturday 25 June – Trivia night
These dates have been set with consideration into the amount of lead time to organise the event as well as Australian U19 absentees in July.
Spit roast night / Senior / junior presentation dates will be confirmed mid year.  More details to follow ….

Boots!:

Just a heads up..
We have come across a charity which is helping kids that might not be able to afford new boots but want to play. (Not necessarily Lacrosse)
The footy boots that have been donated at the club will be delivered to the charity at the end of May. If you need a pair or yours are worn out, make sure you see what’s available in the storeroom before too long!

**God I hope I got everything…. : )
